Your presence is needed at the Spring Business Meeting during the 2019 District Spring Conference on Saturday, May 18, where one of the items on the agenda is the election of the 2019-2020 District Officers. Attendance at the Business Meeting is FREE if you choose not to attend any of the other conference events. Please check-in at the Registration Desk before proceeding to the Credentials Desk for your delegate’s packet and ballots. Please see the The Call to Council – Second Notice and the Delegate’s Packet.

Call to Council

To:  District Steering Committee, Area Directors, Club Presidents, Club Vice Presidents of Education,

Your presence is needed at our Fall Business Meeting on Saturday, September 29, 2018.  This meeting will be District 1’s first virtual business meeting and it is critical for you to be present and vote on four items.  All Club Presidents and VPEs, District Steering Committee members, and Area Directors need to be present at the beginning of the virtual session.  No proxy can be accepted on your behalf.  Your attendance is of great importance in order to conduct business as we must reach the required number of officers to have a quorum.  More specific details will be sent later in the month.

Attendance at the Business Meeting is FREE.  Since it is virtual, you can attend via your computer or via phone.   Below is the agenda including the four items that need your vote for approval.

Scheduled Call to Order:  9 am
District 1 Business Meeting from 9 – 10:30 am (may end earlier based on discussion and voting)

Agenda Items
State of District Address and reports from Steering Committee members and Audit Chair.
  • Ratification of appointed 2018-2019 District Officers
  • Approval of the 2018 Spring Business Meeting Minutes
  • Approval of the District 1 Alignment including recently added new clubs
  • Adoption of 2018-2019 District 1 Budget

All of the reports will be made available to you two weeks prior to the Business meeting on September 15.To make the best use of our time at this virtual meeting, we ask that you review documents early. If needed, email questions to info@district1toastmasters.org ,no later than September 22 so that we can review and be prepared for discussion on September 29.Since a quorum is necessary for this vote to be valid, it is important for you to be present for our first virtual business meeting.  If you are not familiar with being a participant in a virtual meeting, we will be providing online training so all Presidents and VPE and other leaders can be ready to attend business meeting virtual session.  Thank you in advance.  We are excited that we will be the pioneers of this way of doing business.  The entire world of Toastmasters leaders will be conducting their Fall business meetings in this format.

Another Successful District 1 Spring Conference

The District 1 Spring 2018 Conference “Soaring to New Heights” on April 28th was a great success with over 275 in attendance and 56 first timers. The conference team lead by Co-Chairs Keith Jackson, DTM and Larry Lee, DTM performed admirably.  Here are the highlights:

The phenomenal set of presenters provided attendees with a great set of educational tips.

  • Leslie Pogue, DTM shared the importance of LEAD (Listen, Empower, Action, Discover)
  • Michael Osur, MBA, DTM, IDG helped us to Discover our Why
  • Dana LaMon, DTM, WCPS, AS reminded us about making Meaningful Experiences

The Evaluation Speech Contest was led by Contest Toastmasters Cary Kellems, DTM and showcased model speaker Zach Latimor.  Congratulations to all of our participants but especially to our winners: 1st Place John Pope, ACB, ALB, 2nd Place Uche Akotaobe, ACB, CL and 3rd Place RC Sawyer, ACS, ALB.

The International Speech Contest was of equal success led by our Contest Toastmasters Carol Otters, DTM.  Congratulations to 1st Place Wendell Jones, CC, 2nd Place Sherwood Jones, ATM and 3rd place Michael Cormier, ACS.

The 2nd “Ultimate Open House Planning 101” With Even More Tips

District 1 Toastmasters held its 2nd “Ultimate Open House Planning 101” on March 7th.  Led by Open House Chair Yuko Oshimo, DTM participants learned the purpose of and best tips on putting on an Open House.

  • Donna Robinson, DTM – Reminded everyone that dues are due and gave an overview of the various Toastmasters International and District membership campaign
  • David Kitchen, DTM, PDG – Shared best practices on how to set up your open house so that your guests are engaged and converted to new members.
  • Sonya Vasquez, DTM – Offered tips on what and how to promote
  • Merle Singer, DTM QS – Provided an overview of the Speakers Bureau including how to request a speaker and how to become a qualified speaker.

The First District 1 Educational Webinar of 2018 a Success! ~ Ultimate Open House Planning 101

On January 12th, District 1 Toastmasters held “The Ultimate Open House Planning 101”.  Led by Open House Chair Yuko Oshimo, DTM participants learned the purpose of and best tips on putting on an Open House.

  • Yuko Oshimo, DTM – Provided tips on for successful membership building including envisioning your club success, enrolling your club members into your vision and enrolling guests.
  • Lola! Love, DTM – Gave an inspiring speech about the importance of designing your dreams and a perfect example of what we are offering potential new Toastmasters members.
  • Sonya Vasquez, DTM – Offered tips on what and how to promote
  • Tina Tomiyama, DTM – Shared the 5 important things to think about in planning your Open House: 1) agenda, 2) food, 3) guest packets, 4) name badges/table cards & registration, and 5) guest comments

CASTING NOTICE (Deadline Extended): Looking for District 1 Stars to Share Their Experiences

We are searching for District 1 Toastmasters members who:

  1. Are Successful in your professional lives:
    •  Public Speakers
    • Social Media Influencers (bloggers, vloggers, etc)
    • Entrepreneurs (especially in technology, communications and other emerging fields)
    • Service Providers
    • Any other profession that would be of interest to our membership
  2. Can attribute your success to being in Toastmasters
  3. Are willing to tell current and potential Toastmasters how being in Toastmasters has helped in your success through a Facebook live event between February – June 2018

If this sounds like you or someone you know please send the following information by January 27th (deadline extended) to district.one.pro@gmail.com:

  • Name & Contact information
  •  Length in Toastmasters
  • Toastmasters club(s) you are a current member of
  • Brief summary about yourself, the work you want to showcase and how Toastmasters has helped you (no more than 500 word)
  • A video explaining what you would like to share with other Toastmasters (videos should be no longer than 5 minutes in length and be sent in an MOV format)

Don’t think this sounds like you….send your video anyway! You are more fabulous than you realize!!!

This is an unpaid project.  Speakers will be chosen by February 3rd.

Please note that by submitting your video you allow District 1 to use this video for promotional activities regardless if you are chosen to participate in the project.  We may contact you for additional information.

Navigating Technology Tools

Living up to the Toastmaster International goal of creating effective leaders and communicators, District ONE Toastmasters is striving to create opportunities in and outside of our club meetings to build the skills we need our day-to-day lives and aspirations.  More and more clubs are utilizing technology tools and programs that have become standard in business and professional sectors. These tools are also proving to enhance the Toastmasters experience and build new leadership capacities.  These tools will support members as they embark on the new Toastmasters International Education Program Pathways.

To support members, District ONE is offering a training on how to navigate technology tools and web-based programs on Monday, October 9th at the El Segundo LIbrary. Led by Grace Weltman, DTM, the training will provide a hands-on instruction on the following topics:

  • Accessing the Toastmasters International website (access to club and officer resources, downloading and using pre-designed flyers)
  • Understanding and using Google Apps (creating, storing and sharing documents)
  • Working and converting documents and files between Microsoft applications and Google Apps
  • Accessing District ONE forms and resources
  • Managing and constructing emails

District One Fun Day – First Annual Toastmasters Day at the LA Sparks

Thanks to Next Century Toastmasters District One has been invited to an L.A. Sparks game on August 27th at 4pm at the Staples Center. The Sparks have agreed to display each participating club’s names on the Jumbotron during the game. The District Public Relations Manager will also be there snapping pictures of our amazing members having fun.
